Kris
Hurley
Kris has been involved with dog sports since 1989 when
she adopted a little Chihuahua-mix from the local animal shelter. Over the
years Kris & Maggie competed and earned titles in both obedience and agility
and enjoyed working as a registered therapy dog team.
For the past 9 years, Kris & Maggie have continued to
be active in the sport of Canine Freestyle - participating in competitions
and giving demos and seminars across the country. Kris's favorite freestyle
memory was at the 1998 Footloose Fantasy Freestyle Event where she and
Maggie (along with Kris's friend and ballroom dance instructor, Brian Picard)
performed a waltz routine to "Stars Over Texas" - which to this day is the
only freestyle routine to showcase two handlers with one dog. At
the same event, Kris & Maggie also won their individual class with a routine
to "Mr. Pinstripe Suit". Maggie is now 18 years old and still
loves freestyle - this past year, she has earned her W-FD/MF, W-SSFD, and W-SSFDX
titles with multiple 1st place finishes.
Kris also has four other freestyle
partners - Roxie (Pug mix), Nellie (Toy Manchester Terrier), and Shelby &
Bonnie
(Beagles).
At a competition in 2002, Kris & Roxie (along with two other teams from
Puppy Pals) became the first teams in Oklahoma to earn freestyle titles. Kris
& Roxie are also the first Oklahoma team to earn dual titles in both the
freestyle and heelwork divisions, and also the first Oklahoma team to pass
their Bronze Bar Proficiency Test for Musical Freestyle .
Nellie became the first
Manchester Terrier to earn a freestyle title by earning her W-FD/MF.
Shelby did her first demo after only being part of the gang for a month and
just recently earned her W-FD/MF title with two first place finishes!
Even little Bonnie, who started off as Kris's foster beagle, learned some
freestyle moves and earned her first leg after only 3 weeks of training.
All of Kris's dogs are active in the sport of freestyle - doing both
competition and public performances.
In addition to leading the
Oklahoma Freestyle Dogs, Kris continues to enjoy working as a mentor
to teams in Tulsa, Oklahoma as well as several individuals
and groups in
other areas across the United States. Kris has also lead several
discussion and focus group efforts as part of the Sonoran Canine Freestyle
College, and is available to present workshops upon request.
